Bali Travel Guide: Where to Stay in Bali

You’ve booked your flights, but next up is where to stay in Bali? Bali is a wonderful holiday destination for both backpackers and couples, on their first trip to South East Asia because it gently eases you into South East Asian culture.

Next up in my series of content, is a guide to where to stay in Bali. It includes everything from, boutique hostels to 5* hotels. Keep reading to find out more!

In absence of me having visited over the past three years, I have got nostalgic and decided to pull together more content from my time travelling around Southeast Asia and Indonesia.

This guide to 2 weeks in Bali will help you plan your trip, find somewhere to stay in Bali, give you ideas on crazy activities in Bali and much more.

You may have many questions about your 2 weeks in Bali. But fear not! This guide will answer all your questions about where should you stay in Bali.

Once you land in Bali, will you arrive to Denpasar Airport which is close to the beachside city of Kuta on the south of the island. Kuta has lively bars, night clubs and trendy restaurants, while Seminyak, Sanur and Nusa Dua are popular resort towns and are great for surfing too. The best surfing spots on the island are Padang Padang and Uluwatu, so whether you are a pro or want to learn make sure you add a stop here.

Then if you head further inland you’ll come across the gorgeous intimate town of Ubud, a hillside town known for its spa treatments, yoga, monkey forest and buddha bowls. It’s also where a lot of the yoga retreats and meditation centres are on the island, so is perfect if you want some time to relax and recoup.

Sanur is a seaside town in the southeast of the island of Bali and is a favourite with couples and families due to its long sandy beaches and shallow waters. The ocean here is calm and great for children, snorkelling and relaxing by the beach. You can also find the colorful jukung fishing boats here, as well as the town being close to other tourist attractions in Bali such as Pura Blanjong temple, which was built from coral and has to be seen to be believed.

SEMINYAK

Seminyak is a beach resort area at the southern end of Bali, Indonesia, with many luxury hotels, villas and spas and it’s a popular area for couples and families, with their resort life. There are also many bars, cafes and clubs, offering visitors the opportunity to splash the cash. Whilst here you could also head to the beautiful Petitenget beaches, which are wide, west-facing stretches of Indian Ocean shoreline and a great place for an hour of surfing. It’s surrounded by terraced rice paddies and known for beaches like Canggu and Echo, with strong surf which draws in the crowds. Just north of Canggu, you will find the iconic temple of Tanah Lot, a Hindu temple that sits just offshore on a rocky outcrop.

UBUD

One of my favourite places in Bali is Ubud. Ubud is the cultural hub of Bali and is the place that I would recommend you go if you want to experience real Balinese culture. This is where you want to go for amazing food, yoga and rice field adventures.

And it’s also home to monkey forest and stunning temples, as well as hundreds of juice bars, yoga studios and wellness retreats. I love Ubud but it can get quite busy so if you can, go out of season to really enjoy it’s comforts. The surrounding Ubud District’s rainforest and terraced rice paddies, dotted with Hindu temples and shrines, are among Bali’s most famous landscapes.

Where to stay: I have stayed at many hotels in Ubud, here are some of my favourites.

THE GILI ISLANDS

One of the top 5 things to do in Bali is to visit the Gili Islands! There are three islands to choose from including: Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno and all are worth a visit. I’ve visited Gili T and Gili, and found them both super different, Gili T was the party island, whereas Gili M was like a paradise island.

Getting to the islands is easy, with boats leaving from Padang Bai on the mainland and it takes about two hours to reach the islands. When you’re there why not head in to the water for some snorkelling, wander around the island talking to locals and try and find some wild sea turtles.

Where to stay: I have stayed at many hotels in The Gili Islands, here are some of my favourites.

Luxury Hotels

Gili T: The Trawangan Resort – Rates starting from $100USD per night.

Gili Meno: Villa Mojo – Rates starting from $250USD per night.

Mid Range

Gili Air: Grand Sunset Gili Air – Rates starting from $45USD per night.

Gili Air: Manta Dive Gili Air Resort – Rates starting from $45USD per night.

Gili T: Gili Breeze Tropical Bungalows – Rates starting from $30USD per night.

Budget

Gili Meno: Fantastic Cottages – Rates starting from $15USD per night

Gili Air: Scallywags Mango Motel – Rates starting from $20USD per night.
