10 Facts about Croatia [2023]

The tourism industry in the beautiful scenic Balkan nation of Croatia has exploded since 2000. So I have pulled together 10 facts about Croatia for you to know before you travel.

Croatia has benefitted greatly from the boom in visiting international tourists who flock there every year to enjoy soaking up the rays in idyllic spots on the Adriatic Sea.

In this article, we look into some reasons why exactly Croatia is loved so much by returning tourists and why it is such a great luxury holiday destination.

1. The guarantee of majestic sea views

One of the best facts about Croatia is that Croatia’s waters are something for you to soak in and admire. It is little wonder that so many tourists choose to charter yachts for days or weeks to take in the glistening bright blue Adriatic Sea. If you’re interested in a luxury yacht experience in one of the best locations in Croatia, we recommend that you look through The Globe Sailor online and choose Zadar for a yacht rental. By opting for a Yacht Charter in Zadar on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast, alongside enjoying the ocean you will be able to take in the classic roman and venetian architecture of the town, which dates as far back as the 8th century.

2. All year round hot weather

Croatia is lucky enough to have all year round good weather conditions, meaning it is hot and sunny throughout the summer months, but is also a great place to visit in the winter months. Especially if you love the outdoors!

3. Easy access from the UK to Croatia

Luckily for those wanting to jet off for a luxury holiday in Croatia, there are several different airports in the UK which fly to various destinations in Croatia, so it’s easy to get out there. The most popular airport destinations from the UK for tourists are Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Split and Pula. But you can also get to flights to the smaller airports of Rijek and Osijek from London Stansted.

All-year-round there are flights from UK airports such as Heathrow, London Gatwick, Birmingham, East Midlands, Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds Bradford, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast and more. In addition, it’s just under a 3-hour flight from the UK so the journey doesn’t take you too long at all.

4. It’s not expensive within the country

The cost of groceries and eating out in quality restaurants are far lower in Croatia than back in the UK. So, the holiday spending money you need whilst out there may be far less than you originally thought it would be.

What’s more, you may decide to get a luxury all-inclusive package, taking away any worries of you having to calculate your budget to pay for dining out, or getting items in for self-catering in your accommodation.

5. There is a fascinating history to discover

Croatia has a rich history and is home to fossils dating back to the Palaeolithic ‘old stone age’ period of history. Croatia was also part of the Roman Empire and is home to monuments typical of the country’s roman era such as the breath-taking Pula Arena amphitheatre in the city of Pula.

Part of your luxury holiday experience in Croatia could be taking in all the awesome beauty of the intriguing historic sites that are full of interesting tales.

6. It’s a great place to go hiking

Just a 30-minute drive south of Pula will take you to Cape Kamenjak, a stunning nature park bursting with hiking trails and spectacular rocky beaches. And close by you can also find Fažana, which is the perfect spot before setting off on an adventure to Brijuni National Park.

7. The villages and towns are stunning

Make sure you make a visit to Grožnjan, a fairy-tale town situated on a hilltop overlooking rolling green vineyards. The tiny town is known for its summer music school, so if you visit during the months of July and August, you’ll likely see plenty of musicians playing in the streets. And if you love wine, after visiting Grožnjan, continue your way up north to the town of Momjan, the kingdom of Moscato wine.

8. It’s got many UNESCO World Heritage sites

Another amazing fact about Croatia is that there are 10+ UNESCO World Heritage sites. The popular summer resort of Porec, a seaside town famous for its historic centre is on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its impressively preserved Byzantine architecture and mosaics. In addition to this, National Park Plitvice Lakes, Diocletian’s Palace, Split and Old Town, Dubrovnik are all UNESCO heritage sites.

9. The country is green!

Something that surprised me was how green the country is, and it’s so easy to be immersed in nature. Located just outside of the Old Town of Rovinj, the Punta Corrente (Golden Cape) Forest Park is one of the most beautiful natural attractions in Croatia, and offers a large number of activities such as biking, hiking, swimming, and even rock climbing. For those who are looking to relax, the rocky capes and pebbled beaches are perfect for sunbathing and floating in the azure waters.

10. The locals!

And last but not least, my last fact about Croatia. I know I say this ALL THE TIME, but the locals in Croatia are amazing. They are so welcoming, friendly and accommodating and everytime I have visited this wonderful country I have fallen in love again and again.
