My stay at Iceland Hotel Frost & Fire Hotel Hveragerdi
When you think of Iceland, you think small towns, hot springs and beautiful scenery. This hotel was a perfect place to stay for all of this, just 45 minutes outside of Reykjavik is the Frost and Fire hotel situated in the small town of Hveragerdi. This place is perfect if you have rented a car and you’re in need of some rest & relaxation. Read all my posts from Iceland here.
When we flew into Keflavik, we picked up our car and drove into Reykjavik for some exploring. We then drove the super easy drive to the hotel and took in the amazing views along the way. As we approached Hveragerdi, we commented on how great the town looked amongst the mountains and thought the town had lots to offer for its size. There are restaurants, cafes, a supermarket, a petrol station and endless mountains. We found the hotel was in a great location, and much better than staying in the city. It mean’t we had a really accessible base for our four days. It was easy to get back in to the city, we joined the south Iceland road trip easily, and you can also jump straight on to the Golden Circle route in only 15 minutes. The location was great, but it wasn’t the best thing about this place…
The hotel itself was very easy to find and we were welcomed in with a tour of the building. There is a heated pool and two hot tubs that are heated by the hot springs. These all over look the beautiful river situated just behind the hotel which the rooms also overlook. The tubs were perfect to sink into after a day of exploring and we both loved listening to the stream and relaxing. Robes & footwear were also provided for the guests which is a lovely touch and very helpful as it was super cold on your walk from the room to the hot tubs outside by the river. The hot tubs were the real selling point for us, as it gave the hotel that extra ‘sparkle’ despite the cold weather. Every evening after we returned from a busy day we put on our swimsuits and headed down to the hot tubs for a chill out for both mind and body.
As for our room, it was placed in the main building, though there are cabins here too. It was a very comfortable room and a good size room for the two of us. The bed was SO comfy and we both slept so well during our visit here, and the black out curtains were a huge help with Iceland’s sunlight times changing seasonally. The bathroom was very clean and modern with the towels changed daily, a hairdryer which was much appreciated, two comfy chairs, a TV and drink sachets by the kettle. On the shared balcony, there was a table and two chairs for every room which overlooked the hotel and the thermal springs dotted across the hills.
The breakfast was served from 8am to 10am however for the days we had to leave early to get in all the sights, the staff were more than happy to allow us to come in from 7:30 to eat. The breakfast spread was included in the price and so generous and delicious with a range of cereals, fruit salad, cheese and meats and with bread, some of which was cooked in the oven heated by a hot spring just outside! The breakfast also offered a waffle maker with various toppings, a wonderful coffee machine and our favourite part- some cake! There was also a healthy smoothie one morning, just to balance that out which also tasted great.
On our second evening, we decided to eat at the hotel and we were delighted with the food. The waiter was so attentive and funny, we felt the staff go a little extra for everyone eating here, bringing us entrées and when I told them I was vegetarian so couldn’t eat one, they happily swapped it without being asked. For dinner I had the vegetable dish of the day which was vegetable risotto with pea puree which was amazing and Sophie had the beef bourguignon. The restaurant is in the same area as breakfast, it is very clean & modern with a very airy feel, it also has great views of the mountains and the river.
On our last night at the hotel, we decided to go exploring. We crossed the bridge (that took us a while to find even though its right next to the hotel.. our bad!) that crosses the river behind the hotel and walked a short way up the mountain to find some hot springs. This is a great area to hike in and there was also horse riders using the track, the views were beautiful and stretch so far.
We really enjoyed our stay at Frost and Fire and would recommend that if you are on a road trip around South Iceland to stay here! It is a short drive away from so many beautiful sights and we managed to see and do so much in our short time here. We already can’t wait to come back!!
