REVIEW: St Mary’s Inn, Northumberland

Following on from our stay at Jesmond Dene House (read the full review here) we then headed even further north to Morpeth in Northumberland. St Mary’s Inn is a real country retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the city and where you can experience true Northumbrian hospitality.

Only a 2-mile drive from the A1, this upscale country inn is set in a redbrick and was once a former hospital building. It is also 4.3 miles from the market town of Morpeth and 10 miles from Newcastle city centre so it’s location is perfect if you are looking for a relaxing break in the country but also with the close proximity to the city. St Mary’s Inn is basically a pub with a few bedrooms, but it is an upscale B&B in its own right with eleven beautiful rooms that are massive with comfy beds and cosy corners.

St Mary’s Inn was welcoming from the moment we arrived and we checked in to our room on the first floor; a large open room with big windows looking out across the countryside. The airy room had stylish but understated décor and period hints throughout the room including vintage cupboards and dressing tables.

The bathroom was stunning with a marble floor and big bath tub inviting me in for a soak… And of course that’s what I did, filled up the bathtub and had a soak after a long walk around the surrounding villages close to the pub.

That evening we headed out for dinner at The Botanist in Newcastle, before going back to the pub late evening to grab a drink in the bar. We sat in a cosy corner of the pub and grabbed a book each relaxing in front of the fire before bed.

The next morning, we enjoyed a complimentary full English breakfast in the conservatory and sat there for an hour taking in the surroundings and chatting over our breakfast. The pub and restaurant is decorated in light, modern tones with rustic-chic furnishings, and serves a posh, gastro pub-style menu, as well as traditional afternoon tea.

St Mary’s Inn felt like home from the moment we arrived and whether you are visiting to eat, drink or stay this is the perfect place to relax with friends, grab some food and sit in front of the cosy fire.

*I was provided with a complimentary stay at St Mary’s Inn with breakfast, however, as always all opinions are my own and I would not endorse anything I did not enjoy!
