Located perfectly between the Sierra Cabrera mountains and the Mediterranean coastline sits the small town of Mojocar. It is the ultimate summer destination with stunning views, white gleaming beaches and a labyrinth of beautifully preserved cobbled winding streets.
Mojacar is one of the most beautiful towns I have come across in Spain and is like the pictures you see on Instagram with clusters of white-washed square buildings that resemble similar visuals of Santorini, without the dramatic cliff faces.
HOW TO GET THERE
The town is less than one hours drive from Almeria airport and provides a central location for all the attractions of Almeria where you can find more activities, shops and tourist-focused attractions.
WHEN TO GO
There are mild spring and autumn months, and summers that see plenty of sunshine and temperatures in the high 20s.
WHERE TO STAY
There are lots of options when visiting Mojacar and after visiting twice I would definately recommend booking a villa when there. A villa gives you the space and time to really enjoy the area, relax with down time but also create a home from home. I would recommend staying with James Villa Holidays and booking one of their brilliant villas, most with pools and rooms for all the family.
WHAT TO DO
Lining the streets of Mojacar you will find cafes, boutique shops and stunning buildings selling local art and food. It is also a reasonably short walk from the coast to the pueblo.
La Fuente Moro, Mojacars fountain
The fountain has been a vital water source to the village for centuries, in Moorish times it was the centre of the Mojaquero social life, even now residents still use the water for drinking by filling up their plastic water bottles in a weekly ritual.
Puerta de la Ciudad
Also known as Puerta de la Almedina, this is the old city gateway, dating back to the 15th century, the archway proudly displays the Mojacar coat of arms and the inscription of Puerta de la Ciudad, doorway to the city, in both Spanish and Arabic.
Garrucha
The fishing boats set off just before dawn and return in the afternoon with their catch, where you can buy fresh fish at the fish market by the quayside.
Plaza Parterre in Mojacar Pueblo
This square is a beautiful gathering spot for the locals and provides an outdoor seating area with daytime shade by a magnificent old tree and subtle lighting creates a special evening atmosphere. Just across from the town hall, you can also find Iglesia de Santa Maria church with it’s Mojaqueras statue -a marble memorial to Mojaqueras.
Plaza Nueva
The main square of the village is always buzzing with sightseers and shoppers and situated in the square are most of the shops, bars and cafes.
Mirador de la Plaza Neuva
A platform on the edge of the plaza offering incredible views from Mojacar Pueblo to the beach presents down to the valley. It is a great place to sit and relax, sample some local refreshments and soak up the vibrant atmosphere.
