Our Home Renovation // UPDATE

Now we are nearly unboxed from our move, it’s time to start renovating. We’ve had big plans for ages now, and although we’d like to do an extension sometime in 2022, until then we’d like to re-decorate every room in the house.

We plan on re-vamping the living room, office, master bedroom, kids bedroom, dressing room and the kitchen – THE COMPLETE HOME RENOVATION!

We have scoured Pinterest and made lots of NEW HOUSE boards, for the different rooms and we can’t wait to get started.

Our plans for the next few months

The way that our homes appear to us and those who visit is important to many of those reading this.

While it will be a little while yet before we can have people visit our homes, redecorating is at the forefront of many people’s minds, especially when we feel that the current decor has got rather tired, or we are fed up with looking at the same things over and over.

If you are one of the people looking to redecorate their home in some way in 2021, I have you covered! Below is a list of things to consider and remember when doing just that. Get that inspiration board ready and read on for more!

Colour Schemes

Next up on our Home Renovation list is colour. If you are simply giving the walls a new lick of paint, this is the main thing to consider, but several factors contribute to this decision. What colours do you currently have in the room you are seeking to redecorate, and how easy will it be to cover them?

This is something that should be considered for those with bright and vibrant colours in their home. When swapping to a neutral colour following this, you will need to consider how many coats of paint it will need to cover.

Furthermore, contemplating whether you will be using an accent colour of some sort in your colour scheme is also essential. Matching furniture to the colour scheme and having them complement one another is an excellent way of tying a room together and making it the staple of your home.

Get the experts in

We can spend days trying to settle on an idea or imagine how a design may look once it comes to fruition. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Hiring a professional designer to help you understand what you are looking for, and get the job done in record time, is a great idea.

Many designers are now using Cadesign form and helping homeowners design incredible spaces in half the time.

The beauty of CAD is that you are transported into space before you even begin the renovations. You can see exactly how your room will look with different colours on the walls, with different furniture, or even with a wall removed. This helps you make decisions that are right for you and your home.

Saving time by asking for help in this area is recommended. Not only this, but you can quite often gain help from your friends and relatives when you do start to work on your home makeover.

And you will find that most people are happy to help. So even though asking for help may not be in your nature, it may be worth considering to save you time and stress with your home makeover.

Plastering the Walls

This should be considered by those who are planning on doing more than just repainting. It can be challenging to know when exactly to replaster the walls in your home, but there are things that you can do to test whether you will need to or not.

Giving the wall in question a small knock with your knuckles is the best way to tell if you will need to take the time to replaster it. You will know if this is the case, as it will feel as if you are knocking on the brickwork itself, rather than the plaster.

Furthermore, in some cases, you will be able to hear the plaster moving about within the wall space; both are tell-tale signs that you will need to scrape it all off down to the brickwork and start from scratch.

It is a time-consuming job compared to only giving the wall a new lick of paint, but one that pays off and will leave your walls looking brand-spanking new for years to come!

Changing Light Fixtures and Rewiring

Like our previous suggestion, this is suitable for those wanting to fully redecorate in their home, rather than merely changing the colour scheme of a room. Changing light fittings and rewiring a room is indeed a job that can be challenging, more so if you do not have experience doing that sort of thing.

You will require numerous items when wanting to ensure that you are doing as best a job as possible while ensuring that you are not damaging any other wirings contained in your home. Online electrical wholesalers like Expert Electrical provide renovators like yourself with all the equipment you will need to complete a job such as this.

Providing electrical cables and the items required to ensure circuit protection, you can rest assured that you will be set to complete the job safely.

Tools

You can do any job in less time when you have the correct tools for the job. Many people spend too much time on DIY by merely not having the right tools for the job.

Being able to power through the sanding can cut the time in half with a professional sander.

There are many hardware stores that you can visit that specialise in this area, and I’m more than happy to help you with your project. The difference it can make planning ahead and ensuring that you have everything you need before you start is incredible.

Preparation is vital, and there are thousands of YouTube videos for the exact makeover you are looking at, with advice and tips for everything you need.

For example, if you have decided to upcycle your old side table, then knowing exactly how to remove the old paint and prepare the item will save you the stress of working it out for yourself. We are lucky to have Google at our fingertips, so there is a wealth of knowledge available for every problem.

Replacing Flooring

Flooring is something that appears to last a lifetime, but with general wear and tear, and the passing of time, it is also something that will need redoing at some point. It can be challenging to know when to swap the flooring out, with many relying on intuition and what it looks like to the eye.

Mainly for carpet flooring, an ideal time to replace it with a new carpet – or another form of flooring, if preferred – is when it is particularly old or smelly. With many homes nowadays opting for easier-to-clean floorings, like laminate or vinyl, you are spoiled for choice when redoing the flooring in your home.

Not to mention, vinyl and laminate floorings are a lot easier to maintain than carpets and are considerably easier to install.

Declutter

Before you start any home makeover, you will need to declutter your home, but during that process, many people find their ideas suddenly change because the space they are working with is different.

A clear space is a blank canvas. So decluttering before you start to make your plans may help you avoid wasting time getting it wrong the first time. Decluttering can also make you realise if your current spaces are working for you as well. Gaining perspective in a project such as a home makeover is a gift.

The most important thing to remember when redecorating your home is to do so in a way that you want to, and which will appeal to you for some time to come.

However, it should be mentioned that those who are renting their home may need to run ideas past their landlord before going ahead and decorating.
