Last weekend I went to county estate Waddesdon Manor for their Christmas bonanza, in the village of Waddesdon, in Buckinghamshire. Located only 6 miles from Aylesbury and 20 miles from Milton Keynes.
Waddesdon was built in by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild between 1874 and 1885 to display his outstanding collection of arts and to entertain the fashionable world. However today the house is a National Trust property and they welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to enjoy the spectacular grounds and art treasures inside the house. Waddesdon’s collection of French 18th-century decorative arts and 17th- and 18th-century paintings is world famous and its wine cellars and aviary are popular visitor attractions.
Christmas is always a special time at Waddesdon as we found out a few years ago. The house is transformed with unique decorations and they have a Christmas fair with seasonal foods to enjoy. They also put on a light display, artistic field of light and giant gingerbread house. What more could you need for a festive day out with friends or family.
Waddesdon Manor has an array of events on during the festive season and below I have listed a couple of the main attractions on during November and December. Make sure you hang around at dusk to see the light show on the main house and head over to Bruce Munro’s light field whilst you are there!
9 Nov-2 Jan, Wed-Sun
This Christmas we’ll be bathing the outside of the house in a light and sound show every 15 minutes from dusk. From dusk each day during the festive season the outside of the house will be bathed in light while the ‘Lafite’ candlestick sculptures by Joana Vasconcelos will be lit from within. The light and sound show animates the façade of the house with rainbow colours. Created by Woodroffe Bassett Design, the four-minute performance runs every 15 minutes.
Biscuiteers: Waddesdon Manor in gingerbread
9 Nov-2 Jan
See Waddesdon as never before, as we’re recreated in gingerbread by the hand-iced biscuit company the Biscuiteers. Showing at the Stables.
Bruce Munro’s Field of Light
Until 2 Jan
The popular Field of Light installation created by artist Bruce Munro returns to celebrate 25 years since its conception. See 9,000 stems of light ‘bloom’ as dusk falls in our Aviary Glade. This will be Munro’s biggest Field of Light ever seen in the UK.
16 Nov-11 Dec
At this year’s Christmas Fair we’re expecting more than 60 exhibitors and you’ll experience a great selection of unusual Christmas gifts along with festive foods and drink.
‘Magical Materials’ Christmas house decorations
Visit the house and see it all dressed up for the festive season. Our theme this year is ‘Magical Materials,’ inspired by some of the rare and exotic materials featured in our extraordinary collection.
