Auckland itself is actually a region, as opposed to only a city and is surrounded by gorgeous towns and landscapes as far as the eye can see.

Regularly rated one of the best cities to live in in the world, Auckland is a beauty of a destination with a sparkling harbour, waterside suburbs, and a rich culture, alongside a very diverse and multicultural demographic. Looking to visit Auckland this summer? Read this Auckland Travel Guide and find out why.

Don’t miss the Sky Tower with its incredible views, take a day trip to Waiheke Island or get wet at Mission Bay.

There’s plenty to see and do right in the heart of the city, but travelling further afield opens the opportunities considerably – think rainforests, thermal springs, sprawling parks and volcanic cones are just the start.

If you have a week or so here ensure you head south to Hobbiton, and if you have time venture further afield to Bay of Islands.

When is the best time to visit Auckland?

The best time to visit Auckland is at the end of autumn (May) and the beginning of spring (September) as these months are both before and after the more extreme weather. Peak season tends to be in November through to March and then between May and September the temperature drops and tourism drop off.

12 Places to Visit in Auckland

1. Go up the Sky Tower

One of the best places to visit in Auckland is the Sky Tower. It is well worth a visit as it offers incredible views across the city, is the tallest in the southern hemisphere and has a revolving restaurant at the top. Grab a drink or take Afternoon Tea!

2. Visit Auckland Zoo

Auckland Zoo has 150 animal species, 500 animals, and a number of different habitats such as the Rainforest and Pridelands. However, venture out of the city and you will find your own wild zoo.

3. Bungy jump

One of the world’s first bungee jumps is operated by AJ Hackett, the man who created bungy jumping. Here you jump off the bridge into the harbour but if you want something more daring head to Queenstown!

4. Chill out on the Auckland Domain

This giant, beautiful park in the middle of Auckland offers respite from city life – you can run, walk, cycle and play sports here.

An iconic location in New Zealand, Rangitoto Island is a 600-year-old volcano that gives unbeatable views of Auckland. A trail offers casual hikers a one-hour climb to the top. This is another great day trip from Auckland.
