Last month when I was in Amsterdam I stayed a night at the wonderful eco-hostel Ecomama. This incredible hostel is the brain-child of Anika Jacobs, a young female entrepreneur in her 20s who thought the world of hostelling didn’t need to be bad for the environment or un-social-able at the same time that it is private. Ecomama is her second hotel in Amsterdam, following on from the success of Cocomama, only a km away. Having travelled the world for studies, working at hostels and touring with international bands, Anika knows what it takes to give guests an extraordinary experience and this can be seen throughout Ecomama from the little touches, the beds, the comfort, activities on offer and the free-spirit atmosphere you can feel throughout the building.
When I visited I stayed in one of Ecomama’s Double Private Superior rooms which was beautiful. The Superior private double rooms all have an ensuite bathroom with a separate toilet, and come with linen, towels, soap, an i-pod dock to play your favourite tunes, a hairdryer and a coffee & tea set-up. WIFI is free and works in all rooms.
Ecomama perfectly marries the coziness of a community place with all comfort and luxury of a hotel and the meaningfulness of a social impact business. Everyone visiting Ecomama can experience the feeling of sustainable and joyful living. Visitors are encouraged to meet their fellow travellers. It is made easy to share and dream with other visitors about next trips in the large communal space, big kitchen or in a real teepee tent.
Its 7 different types of rooms tailored to a wide variety of people, from the El Cheapo room for those on a shoestring, to a Double Deluxe for a romantic night for two. Apart from water saving system, green roof and cradle-to-cradle building materials, eco-consciousness can be found even in the details.
Used materials, from bricks to teddy bears to corkscrews, are given a second, even better life, in the unique design furniture.

I didn’t get the chance to wear one of these incredible robes but I would snap one up if I could!
Housed in a former travel agency Ecomama has the funky industrial feel combined with cool old upcycled vintage. It is situated just at the end of the Right Light District, and the start of the museum/university neighborhood. Next door is a daily market at Waterlooplein for your cheap groceries or nice flea market finds. It’s a short walk from Central Station.
