Are you ready for the ultimate Cornwall getaways? Located in the beautiful seaside town of Falmouth in the UK, the gorgeous St Michaels Resort is a hotel and spa worth visiting. Since 2002, St Michaels Resort & Spa has provided guests from all over the world with an environment in which they can relax unwind and enjoy the best in Cornish hospitality.
Their ‘feel good again’ philosophy is embraced in all aspects of the hotel including their health club and spa to the food in the restaurant and proximity to the open ocean. They believe that well-being is all about balance and your weekend break in Falmouth can be a mixture of relaxation and activities.
Me and Theo visited Falmouth at the end of September this year and had the best time exploring Falmouth, and the nearby towns and villages. Falmouth is it an underrated town in Cornwall and is often overlooked by the more popular towns of Newquay.
Falmouth is a great town to visit and has a vibrant culture with a great selection of cafés, restaurants independent shops at galleries and fish and chip shops. Falmouth is known for its deep natural harbour and beaches. Falmouth is a great weekend break in the British countryside, perfect for a UK staycation. Other things to do in Falmouth include The National Maritime Museum in Cornwall which has interactive galleries and lots of model boats on display.
Falmouth has been shaped and influenced by a strong connection to the sea combining fascinating maritime heritage. An upcoming town on the south-west coast, Falmouth is leading the way in cultural and festival events, as well as cuisine and activities, such as the Falmouth Oyster Festival.
And the best bit about this hotel is the proximity to the beach. The hotel is situated across the road from Falmouth’s Blue Flag Gyllyngvase beach, one of the most ‘Cornish’ beaches out there. Gyllyngvase beach is ideal for the entire family.

How to get to Cornwall
I would drive, but you can also jump on a bus, fly or get a train. Newquay Airport is 5 mins from Watergate Bay and is served by Flybe which operates year-round services from London and Manchester.
If you are driving, however, be organised for a road trip as it can be a pretty long drive. Stay on the A30 to get anywhere fast or head down the A38 via Plymouth and Liskeard is a much slower route into the county. Trains take quite a while but go from London-Penzance returns from £62 through First Great Western.

During our Cornish getaway we stayed in one of the Beach House Rooms with Balcony, in St Michaels Resort’s brand new Beach House Rooms. Offering the best in contemporary Cornish design, these Beach House rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows that lead on to a balcony or terrace.
Our bedroom featured a massive king size bed, with stunning headboard in reclaimed wood, dressing tables, Lavazza espresso machines and a mini-fridge – they offer the epitome of relaxation.
Our room was also one of the larger Beach House rooms with a terrace out to the side, unfortunately, the weather wasn’t in our favour so we didn’t get chance to use it during our stay, but it’d be amazing during the summertime, looking out across the bay to the ocean.

Food and Drink
On our first night of our Cornall getaway, we dined the the hotel amazing Brasserie on the Bay which overlooks the sub-tropical gardens and on to the dazzling sea. The restaurant showcases the best in Cornish ingredients and their head chef works closely with local producers, farmers and fishermen to create a menu which focuses around using locally grown and reared produce.
The chef at Brasserie on the Bay creates dishes that are fresh, of the highest quality and low in food miles – something that me and Theo loved. It felt fresh, healthy and home-grown. The morning’s catch is brought in each day, so only the freshest fish and seafood make it to your plate. A supporter of sustainable fishing, St Michaels Hotel ensure the species we choose are not threatened or from depleted stocks.
For dinner we opted for Cured mackerel with beetroot escabeche, horseradish creme fraiche, sourdough croutons and Seared pheasant with pickled cherries, Jerusalem artichoke, chestnut, endive to start, followed by Aromatic squash curry with tamarind & coconut curry, jasmine rice, pak choi and Cornish duck breast with root vegetable dauphinoise, charred hispi, blackberry & star anise jus for mains.
We also dined in Brasserie on the Bay for breakfast, and luckily we’re given the option of a table in the window each morning overlooking the bay as the sun came up. This was one of my favourite parts of our stay, and will stay with me for a long time. Make sure you get there earlier than later, to reserve a window spot!
We didn’t dine here, but the hotel also has Garden Kitchen, which offers guests and spa-goers all-day casual dining with a healthy twist. Health and wellbeing are at its heart, so you will find a range of revitalising smoothies and cold-pressed juices alongside a large array of varying salads, quiches, and stone-baked pizzas, with something different every day. But eating well also means the odd indulgence, and the Garden Kitchen has a selection of cakes and other treats, changing daily. Life is all about balance right?

The Spa and Gym
One of the best things about St Michaels Resort Falmouth is the St Michaels Spa, located within the hotel, offering both hotel guests and spa day guests the opportunity to unwind and relax! The spa offers guests a range of hydrothermal facilities, relaxation areas, and luxurious treatment rooms, all within St Michaels Spa. The herbal Finnish sauna cleanses your skin and increases the flow of oxygen and nutrients to your organs, while daybeds and heated loungers help you stretch out and breathe in. Within the experience showers, is the world’s only Cornish sea salt steam room by Living Sea Therapy infuses local sea salt into the steam air, reducing toxins and clearing your lungs.
Beyond the pool, through the french windows, there is a gorgeous south-facing spa garden which offers views of the ocean from the outdoor Finnish barrel sauna and red cedar hot tub. Despite the weather we made sure we popped out for a dip in the hot tub in the rain!
And if that wasn’t enough there is also Falmouth’s biggest gym on-site, offering members and guests over 315 sq. m of the best in fitness and strength training in Cornwall. Mix up your routine with the indoor prowler track and dedicated rowing and spin studios, with the gym’s fully qualified fitness instructors, swimming pool, saunas and much more.

Best beaches in Cornwall
The beaches in Cornwall are some of the best in the country, with a quality and variety of its beaches. There are many long, exposed stretches of sand on the north coast, such as Perranporth and Godrevy, with great opportunity for surfing, and then the southern coast offers more sheltered coves such as Porthcurno and Praa Sands.
There are also many remote beaches such as Harlyn and Kynance offer the chance to really get away from it all. At low tide Cornwall’s longest beach stretches for 3 fabulous miles between Hayle and Godrevy Head. Known as Gwithian Towans Beach, or at the other end Godrevy Beach, this magnificent stretch of golden sand really is one of Cornwall’s finest.
Cornwall is the UK’s surfing home and it’s easy to see why with so many beaches offering the perfect waves for both beginners and pros. The narrow peninsula, jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean offers surfers the perfect collection of beaches, with nearly 200 beaches facing various directions. The variety of surf in Cornwall also makes it suitable for all levels, from the gentle waves of Polzeath to the grinding barrels of Porthleven there’s a spot for you.
