15 Things I Wish I’d Known Before Hitting my 20’S

This month I’ll be turning 25, I know it’s not old, but sometimes I feel like the first five years of my 20’s have been the most difficult of my life so far.

I have struggled with crippling anxiety, I have moved from job to job, before finally finding the ‘one’, I have held down a long-term boyfriend, I have moved house six times, and I have struggled, since leaving university to work out what exactly I want to do in life.

Two minutes ago I was just 18, loving life, drinking too much most weekends and unsuccessfully applying false tan, and basically giving no fucks. And then life hit me, and I turned 20, and I felt lost.

Here’s a list of things that I wish someone had told me back in the good old days…

  1. The first job you get isn’t going to live up to all those expectations you had at university. And it might be a bit shit!
  2. Look after yourself – no one else will.
  3. Holding a relationship between these years is harder than you think. You both change, you grow up, you get new jobs and you never know where you will be in 10 minutes, let alone 5 years.
  4. You’re going to get acne worse than when you were a teenager. No one ever told me this, and my skin from the ages of 22-24 was the worst it’s ever been. Tip: Diet is key!
  5. Eating what you want will catch up with you, both for your body, skin and mind.
  6. Don’t waste your life working in a job that you hate – it’s really not worth it. Take a risk and go for something different, you might just surprise yourself.
  7. Don’t feel like you have to succeed on a level as all of your peers. You are all different and will go on to do different things with your life, at different points, with other people. Stop comparing yourself.
  8. You’re going to cry over everything and nothing – I have never cried so much in the years between my 22nd and 24th birthday. Mainly because of mental health issues, but also because I was just an emotional wreck.
  9. It’s more than likely that only a handful of your friendship group will stick around for the long haul – be prepared for that and accepting of it. I guarantee you can count your best friends on one hand…
  10. And you are going to make friends later in life, people that will be your soul, and there for you, more than those that have been there for 15 years.
  11. Eating healthy isn’t only to lose weight – the benefits of eating fresh, and healthy food does incredible things to your mind too!
  12. Don’t be afraid to have a voice – you will be left behind if you don’t speak out when something needs changing, or you have an opinion.
  13. Stop plucking your eyebrows!!!
Spend money on things that make you happy; experiences above everything, every time! That cute dress from ASOS isn’t going to make you laugh, make memories or help you through tough times.
  14. Say yes to experiences, and say bye to staying in all the time and watching Netflix.
  15. Stop waiting for your life to start and wishing it away. Your 20’s will pass in the blink of an eye, so enjoy them and make amazing memories!
