Lunch at The Cow, Isle of Wight

One of the best places I’ve eaten in a while, The Cow Isle of Wight is one of the most unique places to eat on the Isle of Wight; set in a converted Swiss barn at the heart of Tapnell Farm.

Situated at the heart of Tapnell Farm in a converted Swiss barn, The Cow champions the finest home-grown and locally sourced produce and is renowned for its delicious award-winning burgers – including gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan choices.

The views across the Isle of Wight from the mezzanine level and terrace are hard to beat (especially the sunsets!)

So why not visit for a warm welcome, great service and find out why they are known as one of the most unique places to dine on the island!

We stopped off here on Saturday as we were already heading to this end of the island, and stopping at Tapnell Farm too.

Opening Times

They are open 7 days a week for lunch, and every Friday and Saturday evening dinner (plus occasional Thursday evenings for special events).

From the outside this place doesn’t look like much, it’s a barn conversion with a big sign outside reading ‘The Cow’ Isle of Wight.

But apart from that, it doesn’t really give much else away until you enter the restaurant and are instantly taken aback by the size of the open-plan building with mezzanine level upstairs.

We were seated upstairs which gave us some lovely views, both of the restaurant and of the scenery outside towards Freshwater Bay.

They are most well known for their burgers, but also serve an array of dishes including steaks, mac and cheese, antipasti and sides, including their famous Dirty Fries, with Melted Mozzarella, Red Leicester cheese, Mustard, Aioli, Shredded Lettuce & Jalapenos.

Their dedication to freshly cooked food, locally sourced ingredients and sparkling service is what sets this place apart from the rest…

It was incredibly hard to choose what to eat here as everything looked incredible.

I opted for the Matador Burger, which was a hand-pressed beef patty with chorizo, Red Leicester cheese, spiced mayo, chorizo, onion, jalapenos, lettuce & tomato. It really was fully loaded with everything – and tasted amazing – despite falling apart in my hands.

Theo went for The Monthly Special – The Big Chill, which was, as it was described ‘big’ and was a hand-pressed beef patty with chilli, Red Leicester cheese, soured cream, jalapenos, and tortilla chips.

Theo loves food, and will and can eat literally anything, but even this mammoth burger beat him on this occasion. And he even opted for the famous dirty fries too….

And then Arabella went for the kid’s version of the standard beef patty burger, with fries and chorizo! I’ve never heard her so quiet…

And to finish Theo and Arabella had an ice-cream each (I can’t as I am lactose intolerant) before we headed over to Tapnell Farm to burn off all those calories we had just consumed.

It was an amazing meal – the food was 5*, one of the best burgers I’ve ever had and the service was also exceptional.
