THE ANXIETY FIX: Improving my sleep patterns with Sleep Origins

If you’ve read my blog for more than one second, you’ll know how much I love sleep. I try and sleep as much as I can, all day everyday! It is also one of my triggers for my panic attacks and anxiety, so for me it is important for both my physical and mental wellbeing. I am always keen on improving my sleeping patterns.

I ensure I get my eight hours every night, and when I don’t get the right amount of sleep I feel drained and unwell for days afterwards. It’s another reason I no longer do 6am flights! If you’re interested here are my top tips for getting a good nights sleep.

Sleep Origins asked me to write a diary recording my sleep prior to getting the mattress, and during the first 7 days I slept with my new Sleep Origins mattress, here’s how I go on…

Generally my sleep, before changing my mattress, was good. I always ensure I get my eight hours but before I started tracking my sleep I was never sure if it was actually ‘good’ sleep or affected sleep. It turns out I was actually stirring in the night quite a lot, and always got up once for a wee in the night (I blame my weak bladder!). Other than that I slept OK, except when I was having a stressful week; then I would struggle to get to sleep and thus wake up several times in the night.

Night One

I’ll be honest now, my first night with the new mattress wasn’t good. My body couldn’t adjust, it felt different and I ended up waking up several times in the night. I ended up tired the next day and really struggled with the concept of sleeping on it again that night.

Night Two

On the second night, I slept much better. I was nervous at first after having a disrupted sleep the night before, but I went to bed early, and got settled earlier than usual. I still awoke several times, but it was better, and I managed to get comfy after 30 minutes of tossing and turning, and once I was asleep I slept well. My sleep tracker showed I stirred only a few times, and woke up at 4am for a wee.

Night Three and Four

On the third and fourth night, I awoke a couple of times, but my sleep was generally better according to the app. The mattress felt better, moulding itself around my body throughout the night, alleviating pressure points and keeping my spine perfectly aligned throughout the night (now I just need to sort out my posture when sitting at my desk!).

Night Five

On night five, I couldn’t get comfy for ages and only ended up falling asleep around midnight. I think it was mostly down to the stress of work the next day. I am not sure if it was the stress or the mattress, but night five wasn’t great and again I was doubting the concept.

Night Six

Then on the sixth night, I slept the entire way through, not even getting up for my usual 4am toilet break. I woke up feeling fresh and ready to start the day, despite the busy schedule ahead of me that morning.

Night Seven

After seven nights of sleeping the mattress I have to say I am impressed. I was dubious at first, and I was certainly nervous after the first night as I didn’t think my body was agreeing with the new mattress. However, after a week I am already seeing the benefits and with the added lavender pockets in the side I have been getting a deep restful sleep – night after night.

    If I want a good night’s sleep I try not to drink anything two hours before (alcohol is a definite no-no!) and as I’m such a light sleeper I find wearing ear plugs helps. I can still hear my alarm but I don’t get woken by even the slightest noise during the night. I also tend to sleep better when I’m alone in bed, but I think my boyfriend might have something to say if I banished him to the spare room every night! 😉

      I always used to drink camomile before bed but recently stopped and I have been sleeping better (mostly because I dont need a wee as often!) xxxx

    Haha as dodgy as it sounds…wine! Not every night of course but if I’m having sleep problems I usually have a glass and it gets me going. Or horlicks if I have to take sleeping tablets (I do v.v. occasionally). Totally get what you mean about no sleep making you feel more anxious – I can feel so terrible the day after. I also get very grumpy so I feel sorry for my boyfriend haha,

    I find having a relaxing bath with soothing lemon balm oil really makes me sleepy afterwards! My body temp goes up so I feel all warmed up and cosy before bed also decreases any stress from the day.

    Rescue remedy night capsules and the sundown on my Lumie sunrise alarm clock. It’s a constant battle against my anxiety just to get to sleep!

    Fresh bed sheets and my own bed for the perfect nights sleep. And try not to check my phone just before I turn my lit out!

    Switch off all technology about 1/2 an hour before bed to enable you to unwind – read a book instead with a warm milky drink x

    Stick to a sleep schedule of the same bedtime and wake up time, even on the weekends. This helps to regulate your body’s clock, it really did help mine!

    A shower before bed, fresh pjs and sheets are a good way to get a good kip. Also chamomile and spiced apple tea half hour before bed is relaxing. Also very much love a puffy cushion!

    I work shifts so no system works well, sometimes i sleep ok and other time i don’t sleep at all or i wake up after a hours sleep. Just have to get my bed as comfy as possible and hope its a sleep night. I do sleep well during the day after a night shift though, its nearly always a sleep day after night shift

    Having been a chronic Anxiety sufferer for many years, now recovered, my tip for a restful night’s sleep is a little card I carry around with four letters on it. I found this came to me one day from my heart. I refer to it every day and it makes me smile to remember it.
    A – Accept responisibilty (that just means don’t try and push the feeelings away. Accept them. They are Just fine to have. In fact, more than fine, they are perfect)
    B – Be confident. ( that just means now you have done A, you are not running away or trying to solve the ‘problem’. You can simply go to sleep. If you wake that’s ok, because everything is normal and fine for you) You can wake and make a drink or snack, there are no rules and it is all fine. If you look at your picture above, you see a pretty lady with a good skin.
    C – Choose quality (that means that you are no longer not getting into judging your performance) You choose to be kind to youself and expect nice things just for being you – like happy sleep and good days for instance.
    D – Delay gratification (that means that while you practice ABCD you don’t want instant results because they are a flash in the pan. Learning new ways takes time and that is perfect!)
    I know this sounds weird and insane, but to me, advice from any other quarter did nothing to resolve my anxiety, and this did! I wish you well : )

    If you have pets, keep them off the bed and, even better, out of the bedroom completely. It is surprising how disruptive they can be.

    I really relate to needing a decent sleep to help with anxiety. I try to limit screen time and spend some time relaxing before getting into bed. Scented candles and a warm bath always help, if I’ve got time.

    This is super interesting! I’m currently hunting for a mattress as I’m moving house but have no idea where to start, so very useful!
    For me, falling to sleep means doing a heavy workout that day so I feel more tired by the evening, and having peppermint tea and a tidy room so nothing is around me to stress me out.

    Freshly laundered cotton or linen bedlinen, non restrictive sleepwear, clean hair ( a relaxing bath before bed is ideal), a spritz of This Works deep sleep pillow spray, no technology in the room ( not easy!!) and a good book are my good sleep best practices! A lavender infused silk sleep mask that rests on your eyes, and made by my lovely friend Christina completes the ritual. Take me there now!!!

    No screens for at least an hour before bedtime – I like to relax and read a book just before going to sleep. I also find deep yoga breathing to be useful if I’m having trouble dropping off to sleep :o)

    Pitch black room, silence, clean sheets, and at the moment my being propped up with pillows and with my giant U shaped pregnancy pillow is the only way I can get through the night!! Also can’t sleep if the other half is spooning me.. But I can sleep being the spooner.. But preferably I like to not be touched 😂

    I have a very restless mind and usually find it hard to sleep at night, especially when I have lots going on in my personal life. On nights when sleep just seems impossible, I always listen to my favourite band to help calm me down and lull me into a deep sleep. The band Aqualung is so soothing to me and Matt Hales voice is angelic to me <3 I suggest the song 'Home' .

    Try to go to sleep and get up at the same time every day. This helps set your body’s internal clock and optimise the quality of your sleep. Choose a bed time when you normally feel tired, so that you don’t toss and turn.

    Also makes it easier to get up if you have to literally get out of bed to turn your alarm off!

    Oh my a new mattress is exactly what I need, after renovating my house the one things left to do is replace my bed and mattress. Its currently terrible!!

    Number one sleeping tip would be to read last before you sleep and NOT on your phone! I don’t always live by this but find reading a book instead of my phone before sleep, even if it’s just a page or two. It’s helped me so much! I also love clean sheets and fluffy pillows more than anything! Dreamy!

    Got any tips for sleeping on planes? I’m about to embark on a 31 hour journey!! EEK!

    When I was little, my mum used to give me a bag of lavender to hang nearby to help me sleep which was SO lovely and soothing – nowadays a bit of pre-bedtime yoga is honestly wonderful (especially the bit at the end where you just lay flat on your back doing absolutely nothing…) Would recommend the youtube channel YogaWithAdrienne if you don’t already know it. She does easy 10 minute wind-down videos that are lovely. 🙂

    Mine would be comfy pjs that don’t ruck up when you’re trying to get comfortable, and bedsocks (if my feet are cold I don’t get a good night’s sleep).

    Being warm and having comfy pjs, I can’t sleep unless I’m warm enough (although I can’t be too cold either!)

    I got new pjs for Christmas and they’re so comfy if axtauly makes me look forward to bedtime, not something I’ve ever really been known for!!

    The only way I can sleep is by reading until I drop off to sleep and then I sleep better.
