What’s better than spending all of January planning your trips for the year? I love doing this every January and have been using Lonely Planet and other guidebooks for inspiration, as well as others bloggers.
But where should we be travelling to in 2021? Here are Destinations to visit in 2021 based on my most recent research looking at where we travelled in 2018 and destinations that are looking big in 2021 according to data and sites such as Forbes and Lonely Planet. Here are my favourites….
10 DESTINATIONS TO VISIT IN 2021
Part of the Arab nation, Jordan is a country I’ve wanted to visit for years. I am so interested in the history of the world, and so much of our history as humans come from this region of the world. The region is defined by ancient monuments, nature reserves and seaside resorts. It’s home to the famed archaeological site of Petra, the Nabatean capital dating to around 300 B.C which is somewhere I must visit before I die.
Set in a narrow valley with tombs, temples and monuments carved into the surrounding pink sandstone cliffs, Petra earns its nickname, the “Rose City” and is possibly one of the iconic wonders of the world. I am adding this to my bucket list right now and hopefully can visit Jordan in 2020. The most popular places to visit in Jordan are Petra, Wadi Rum, Mount Nebo, Al-Khazneh and much more.
A city which has been on my radar for a while is Doha – a friend visited there a few months back and ever since I have been engrossed with the culture. Doha is a modern city on Doha Bay and is a man-made island.
The city is waterfront with numerous parks and the Corniche Promenade. At Souq Waqif, a traditional market, vendors offer goods like clothing, crafts and spices and its the perfect place to grab some intricate jewellery or a souvenir to take home. Doha is home to Souq Waqif, a turreted Doha Fort (Al Koot Fort), built in the 1920s, The Mathaf Arab Museum of Modern Art, the Pearl, a massive artificial island with high-end shops and Doha Golf Club which has an 18-hole championship course.
This wonderful place is actually on my hit list for 2021, but I am yet to book flights and create an itinerary so until then it’s going to have to stay in my bucket list. I am dying to visit Alberta and British Columbia for a once-in-a-lifetime road trip this autumn.
I’d love to fly into Vancouver, head over to the Rockies, explore Jasper and Banff, before heading to Calgary, Edmonton, and then back to Vancouver for some city adventures and some time on Vancouver Island. It’s also a great place to skiing, hiking, cycling, abseiling, and much more.
Away from the cities, Kananaskis Nordic Spa, the first of its kind in the province, just unveiled a collection of hydrotherapy pools — as well salt exfoliation cabins and eucalyptus steam rooms — right in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. And if you’re in Banff National Park, keep an eye out for bison.
Oh Belize, I dream about you every day. And I’ve wanted to visit this wonderful island even more since I watched The Bucket List family spend a week at Hatchet Caye last year. Belize is a nation on the eastern coast of Central America, with the Caribbean Sea shorelines to the east and dense jungle to the west. Offshore, the massive Belize Barrier Reef, dotted with hundreds of low-lying islands called cayes, hosts rich marine life.
Belize’s jungle areas are home to Mayan ruins like Caracol, renowned for its towering pyramid. Belize is also known for its beaches and eco-lodges, and scuba diving and fishing are popular pastimes. Diving areas include Hol Chan, rife with sharks and stingrays, and the massive Great Blue Hole, a sinkhole once explored by Jacques Cousteau.
The most popular spots to visit are Great Blue Hole, Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, Lamanai and much more.
Hoi An, Vietnam
Hoi An is one of my favourite places in the world. I visited twice when I was backpacking in my younger years and loved this cultural city. It is one of Vietnam’s most historically significant (and beautiful) cities but now also offers luxury beachfront holidays. It is also now a UNESCO-protected “Ancient Town” which is incredible and does this marvellous city justice.
The former port city’s melting-pot history is reflected in its architecture, a mix of eras and styles from wooden Chinese shophouses and temples to colourful French colonial buildings, ornate Vietnamese tube houses and the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge with its pagoda. This is also where you can get handmade personalised clothes from!
I am off to Cyprus this year and I cannot wait. But this island is (in my opinion) so underrated. The island (and capital city Nicosia) is divided with Turkey to the north and over the years there has been civil war and tensions, however, the island is stunning and around every corner, there is history and adventure.
The island is known mostly for its beaches, and it also has a rugged interior with wine regions. Coastal Paphos is famed for its archaeological sites relating to the cult of Aphrodite, including ruins of palaces, tombs and mosaic-tiled villas. I am super excited to come back to this magnificent island in 2020.
A fellow blogger went here last year and ever since, after seeing their beautiful photos of clear blue waters and stunning coastal paths, I have wanted to visit. It’s Croatia’s lesser-known sister, but this country is just as stunning and full of adventure.
The country is most know visually for its show-stopping UNESCO World Heritage-protected fjord-like boka (bay), which will take your breath away and offers the most stunning crystal blue waters, hemmed in by mountains. At the end of May, the town of Budva, on the Adriatic Coast, will host Games of the Small States of Europe, an Olympics-style, multi-sport event for nine nations with a population of under one million. It’s also a lively beach town, with luxury yachts in the harbour and a party vibe in the old town centre.
Until about two years ago visiting the USA did not bother me in the slightest and I still have slight reservations (mostly Trump) but after doing my research and looking in to where I would go if I were to go westside, I stumbled across the incredible city of Nashville. The city is the capital of the U.S. state of Tennessee and home to legendary country music venues include the Grand Ole Opry House.
It’s most famous for its music and pays homage to many incredible stars who have visited the city to record albums and perform in the city. A must-visit is the Johnny Cash Museum, celebrating the singer’s life. Germantown is filled with Victorian buildings, and the avenues of Music Row are lined with recording studios, including Historic RCA Studio B, where Elvis Presley recorded over 200 songs. What history! That’s why I want to visit…
Another place that a few years ago I would’ve declined a trip here if I had been offered, but these days Turkey’s tourism is booming with more tourists than ever visiting this stunning country. It’s also a country with a lot of history and something I’d love to learn more about on my visit.
Another place that’s making me want to visit is the semi-arid central region of Cappadocia, especially Göreme, which is known for “fairy chimneys” (tall, cone-shaped rock formations), cave dwellings and early morning rises to watch the hot air balloons float about the town.
Where do I even start with Israel? A lot is happening in the Holy Land in 2021 including; more airlines than ever are launching flights to Tel Aviv, a new high-speed train, which connects Tel Aviv and Ben Gurion International Airport, hundreds of new hotels are popping up every month and even a wellbeing revival, as more spas and beachfront properties appear. This country is all about change and I love it!
