Imagine waking up in your king size bed opening your eyes and being overwhelmed by indulgence and interior design to die for.

The hotel is best known for being the place where Kate Middleton and her family stayed the night before the Royal Wedding and is situated close to Victoria underground station and more importantly Buckingham Palace. Set on a quiet, leafy street in Belgravia, across the road from Buckingham Palace The Goring is set in one of London’s most desirable areas.

The Goring is a favourite with the royals and tourists to London but it is also exclusive and most importantly the hotel defines luxury in London. The Belgravia hotel is one of the few hotels in London to have been given the Royal Warrant from the Queen and proudly displays the Royal coat of arms.

It’s a real family tradition

The family-operated hotel was opened in 1910 by Otto Goring and remains in the family to this day, run by Jeremy Goring. The hotel is steeped in history, has been running for over a century by four generations of the Goring family and has been hailed as the oldest and most decadent hotel in London.

The hotel is not just a favourite to the Middleton’s, the hotel has been a favourite for many famous icons and celebrities over the years including Winston Churchill who was a frequent guest here back in the day, and his mother, Lady Churchill even lived here for a short period after the First World War.

Décor at The Goring

To mark the hotels 100th anniversary in 2010, the hotel began a stylish revamp of the communal area and the bedrooms. The hotel redecorated the ravishing new Front Hall, clad with hand-painted wallpaper of exotic animals, the Bar & Lounge, the Dining Room and the garden which adds a unique sense of space and privacy. The rooms were all redesigned over the past few years too, and the bedrooms are true luxury yet homely at the same time.

I recently stayed at The Goring and was blown away by the décor in our room, the Delightful Suite. It boasted an entrance hall, bedroom, bathroom and seating area along with fruit bowl, champagne cocktail set and goodies in the bathroom.

The best bit? The light settings in all the rooms give you four options – my favourite was labelled ‘Oooh’ which was a dim light which oozed relaxation.

Part of the experience

The staff play a big part in the hotels history and many are long serving, notably the larger-than-life David Morgan-Hewitt, MD. From the moment you walk through the door the staff are welcoming and on hand for any moment you may need a single thing. Whether you need a new towel, some tea or advice on where to visit in the local area, the staff are incredible and really make your stay at The Goring!

Surrounding area

Located in the surrounding area to the hotel there is a large collection of museums open for the public close to the hotel with the Natural History Museum in South Kensington and the V&A Museum and The British Museum in the close vicinity. As the closest five star hotel to Buckingham Palace, with London’s finest royal attractions and parks just yards away, with St James’s Park across the road, the Royal Mews around the corner and a trip to the palace’s state rooms a five minute walk away.

So whether it is a trip to a musical at one of London’s hundreds of theatres, a little bit of light shopping at Harrods in Knightsbridge or Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park this Christmas – everything is only a short taxi ride.

Overall

It is true this hotel doesn’t come cheap but wow, you are getting your money’s worth! A room like mine or similar comes at around £430 per night but when staying at a place like The Goring you are paying for the package and the experience.

The rooms, the facilities, the staff, the décor, the location and everything in between means that this fantastic hotel provides everything you could need for a glamourous luxury weekend in London.

*If an overnight is that little bit too much why not indulge in their award winning afternoon tea or go for dinner in their newly awarded Michelin star restaurant, the first star in the hotel’s history.

After another kind of stay in London, why not stay at The Hospital Club or grab dinner at The Arch.

Note: Rates for a Delightful Room start from £430 per night excluding breakfast, Belgravia Suites start from £1,340 per night excluding breakfast and the Royal Suite starts from £8,400 per night including breakfast and a host of amenities. Bookings via: www.thegoring.com.
