A Mexican fiesta
As 2016 starts to creep even closer I have been giving my trips for the forthcoming year some thought. 2015 saw me travelling a lot around the UK and Europe, following on from a three month stint in Australia and New Zealand.
In 2015 I travelled to many parts of the UK including Bath, Brighton, Birmingham (notice the B’s – maybe it’s a thing), Cambridge, Milton Keynes, London and many, many more. And in Europe I have been to Berlin, Copenhagen and Marbella!
Truth be told despite no big trip I have been busy!
However 2016 is currently looking pretty quiet, I have only one trip booked away so far to Amsterdam in March, with another possible trip to Berlin in January but apart from that I have been thinking hard about where else I’d like to go!
What type of travel am I craving at this point in my life?
I adore the road travelled but also something a little different. I inspected the internet, do I fancy dancing in Ireland, skiing in Austrai (of course but for obvious reasons), the sun in South America or the culture in Bulgaria? Maybe next year. This year I am thinking… Mexico.
The raw, authentic and unfamiliar cultural experiences that many associate with Mexico is what I am craving, something different, and something new. I have done a fair amount of the UK and Europe this year and I am now needing something bigger. I need a trip which will change me as a person again, and make me think differently about life (sorry to go all deep on you).
Mexico hasn’t always had the most positive representation but this year seems to have been the beginnings of this incredible country. They were the lead sponsor at this year’s World Travel Market and since then I have ads and marketing for them everywhere. Unlike normally, surprisingly this hasn’t put me off and instead it has made me fall for the headlines, I am desperate to go!
It may be a country of well-known routes, but I can tell from browsing the web that this country has so much to offer and I cannot wait to find out more.
So why is Mexico top of my list?
The basics: covering almost two million square kilometres, Mexico is the fifth largest country in the Americas, the 13th largest independent nation in the world with an estimated population of over 120 million. By 2050 it is expected that Mexico could become the world’s fifth or seventh largest economy and is considered both a regional power and middle power, often identified as an emerging global power.
Due to its rich culture and history, Mexico ranks first in the Americas and sixth in the world by number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In 2010 it was the tenth most visited country in the world, with 22.5 million international arrivals annually and as the world gets even more connected destinations such as Mexico are getting easier and cheap to visit for us normals. Pretty good huh?
Of course this also means it is getting harder and harder to witness something unique but by travelling to places that are unique in their own right, away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist spots, it gives you the opportunity to experience unique.
Mexico inspires me because of its culture and history.
Images like this certainly inspire me more….
Who the hell wouldn’t want to visit a country like this?! Food, culture, entertainment, architecture, history, sights, diving, snorkelling, karting…
Mexican culture reflects the complexity of the country’s history through the blending of indigenous cultures and the culture of Spain, imparted during Spain’s 300-year colonization of Mexico.
The most famous attractions are the Meso-American ruins, cultural festivals, colonial cities, nature reserves and the beach resorts. The nation’s temperate climate and unique culture – a fusion of the European and the Meso-American. The coastlines of Mexico harbour many stretches of beaches that are frequented by sun bathers and other visitors. On the Yucatán peninsula, one of the most popular beach destinations is the resort town of Cancún.
The peak tourism seasons in the country are during December and the mid-Summer making it the perfect summer destination!
Scuba, scuba, scuba
I am a fish out of water, a mermaid or turtle in a past life. I love being in the water and dream of hitting the waters of Mexico with my snorkel over my face and GoPro in hand. I need my snorkelling fix… Oh and I want to learn how to scuba properly, I’ve done it before but only a few hours!
Hiking around historic monuments like this…
Mexico is one of the 17 megadiverse countries of the world. With over 200,000 different species, Mexico is home of 10–12% of the world’s biodiversity. The nature in Mexico is awe-inspiring and if you love nature and the environment this is the place to go!
The Tropic of Cancer effectively divides the country into temperate and tropical zones. Land north of the twenty-fourth parallel experiences cooler temperatures during the winter months. South of the twenty-fourth parallel, temperatures are fairly constant year round and vary solely as a function of elevation. This gives Mexico one of the world’s most diverse weather systems.
Beaches like this.
EUGH. Winter is depressing in the UK sometimes and the pictures cluttering my Instagram feed are of beautiful beaches all across the world. However something that stands out for me is the dreamy beaches of Mexico. It makes me want to transport myself to the beach in the photo, with gin and tonic in hand, book by my side and sunglasses screening the sun as I drift in to perfect dreamy sleep… back to reality!
Now back to the blogging, see you on the other side…
